Brave River helps one of nation’s top-three state tourism sites develop a mobile website.
Warwick, RI – April 25, 2011 – This afternoon, the Rhode Island Division of Tourism officially launches the mobile version of their website, visitrhodeisland.com. Mobile browsers are automatically detected by the website, and directed to the mobile-friendly version of the full site. The site features a menu where visitors can select options for places to eat and stay, things to see and do, and resouces for planning a trip to Rhode Island. Another great feature that was implemented for this site is the geolocation tool. With geolocation, mobile visitors can find businesses, such as attractions, hotels, and gas stations, that are nearby their current location.
The idea to create a mobile website was established based on trends noticed from Google Analytics reports, showing more and more users accessing the site from iPads, smartphones, and other mobile browsers. “The nature of the tourism industry is demanding quicker and easier access to information” says Ernie Gaines, Brave River President.
The challenge to creating an effective mobile site is to make it fast, provide light images, and make the page sizes minimal. You want the site to involve as few clicks as possible, and avoid any cumbersome features. As mobile browsers are quickly evolving, Brave River has implemented use of the WURFL (Wireless Universal Resources File) database to keep up-to-date on which browsers are mobile.
As the demand for fast and immediate information is growing, Brave River predicts a rise in the request of more mobile specific websites. Mobile development is an extension of their e-Business Solutions offering, and allows clients translate their current sites into mobile-friendly versions.
